What Things Can be Recycled?

If you are wondering what things can be recycled then there are many items that can be recycled, including:

  1. Paper products: newspaper, office paper, cardboard, paperboard, and envelopes. You can take these to your local recycling centre or there are also often paper banks in supermarket car parks. Make sure that they are clean and dry.
  2. Metal products: steel and tin cans, aluminium cans, and small appliances. If you put these into your household waste then make sure to ball up metal waste where possible so that it is at least the size of a tennis ball, otherwise it can’t be recycled.
  3. Glass products: food and drink containers – take these to a local glass bottle bank. For bogger glass items these can be taken to waste recycling centres.
  4. Plastic products: bottles, containers, and packaging materials. It is sometimes difficult to know what types of plastic items can be recycled and you often have to check with your local council. Hard plastics can be taken to recycling centres.
  5. Electronics: computers, cell phones, and other small electronic devices. These can often be taken to council recycling centres.
  6. Batteries: household and car batteries – recycle at supermarkets, schools and waste recycling centres.
  7. Textiles: clothing, linens, and other fabrics. Charity shops will take good quality items. Clothing/textile banks will also take these.
  8. Garden waste: grass clippings, leaves, and branches. Create a compost heap in your garden to make use of these.

It is important to note that not all recycling programs accept all of these items, so it is always best to check with your local recycling program to see what materials they will accept. In addition, it is important to make sure that items are clean and empty before recycling them, as contamination can make it difficult or impossible to recycle certain materials.

Many local council recycling centres take almost all of these items so if you can’t recycle them at the kerbside then take them along to your local council rubbish dump.
