Waitrose Trial on Reduced Packaging

I was pleased to hear that Waitrose had announced that they were going to introduce some products that were packaging free and that you could bring your own containers for. Unfortunately when I read further I realised that this was just a trial in one branch of Waitrose in Oxford.

Still, progress has to start somewhere so I’m just hoping that the people of Oxford support this and that it extends to other stores. Waitrose is one of the nearest supermarkets to me but I have to say I don’t shop there very often for a couple of reasons: one is that it is more expensive than other stores (although I would say there are a lot of better quality products in there than other cheap supermarkets nearby), but the other reason is that when I last went in there to get some fruit and veg I was actually pretty disgusted at the amount of plastic wrapping that the majority of fruit and veg was enclosed in. Hardly anything was sold plastic free so I really didn’t feel inclined to buy anything.

However, if this does change and there are things I can buy using my own containers, as well as plastic free fruit and veg, I would probably be enticed to go back in and see what they have to offer.

It really is about time that the supermarkets all take on this initiative (I know that some of them are better than others) so that we really have the choice to reduce the amount of plastic and other packaging that is mostly unnecessary that comes with all the things we buy.
