Reusable Fruit & Veg Bags

One of the first things that I started to do to reduce my waste of plastic bags was to buy some reusable fruit and veg bags. This is a very easy win as long as you remember to take them with you to the supermarket!

Even the small reusable bags will fit in half a dozen small apples.

The only issue I have with this is that at the moment there is not very much choice in terms of the fruit and veg that you can buy at supermarkets that is not in packaging. I do think that things are starting to change but at the moment there is often only one choice of each fruit or veg option that is not packaged (and sometimes none).

I have found this quite frustrating as often the non-packaged stuff can be more expensive than the packaged! I have actually got to the point where I try not to look at the price any more 🙁

I’m sure I remember that fruit and veg 30 years or so ago was not so packaged, but maybe I am looking at things through rose-tinted glasses!

In particular I remember that grapes never used to be packaged in plastic boxes. You could choose how many grapes you wanted and put them in a bag yourself. OK so the bag was still involved but these days I could be using the reusable ones.

The reusable fruit and veg bags that I bought are the ones below. They come in 3 different sizes and have a drawstring closer. They are really lightweight so won’t really add very much extra when you are weighing your veg out.

My other beef is that I prefer to buy the organic bananas but the ones that I like best are always packed in a plastic bag. I have gone back to non-organic ones for now but I will be trying to seek out organic non packed ones if I can.

In fact I have also started to go to the local greengrocer which is not really too far away. The prices are pretty good and nothing is packaged. I do take my reusable bags with me but they actually put things in paper bags when you buy then if you ask so that is an alternative to the plastic.

The bags that I have are washable so if they do get any marks/muck etc on them you can just stick them through the wash.
