Compost Heap Created

So I finally got myself a small compost bin for the kitchen – I had been using the small compost bags to put my food waste in and then putting those in the brown bin but I did find that although they were supposed to be leak free then did end up seeping through at the bottom and they got fruit flies buzzing round as they don’t have a lid.

So at this point I thought it was about time I sorted out my compost heap in the garden – actually it was just a dumping ground for grass cuttings and other waste so I wanted to convert it a bit more properly.

I had some old pallets in the garden that I had been saving for… well whatever I might think of! So I looked on YouTube and found a video for creating a compost heap using pallets. It wasn’t too difficult to make although it did require a fair bit of effort and might have been easier with 2 pairs of hands but it can be done on your own if you need to!

I made up 3 sides using materials that I had hanging around but haven’t quite decided how to finish up the front bit yet so it is still a bit of a work in progress. My pallets were slightly different sizes but I managed to get round that and make something that works.

Mine doesn’t look quite so fantastic as the one int he video but it will do and it definitely looks a bit more tidy than the heap that I had before that had started to spread too much and also start to rot the back fence.

I do find that I fill up the small kitchen compost bin quite quickly, particularly as we get through quite a bit of fruit in our house, so it is good that this now goes onto the compost heap rather than into any other waste bins.

I have also been growing some vegetables in the garden so the compost has come in handy for that and I am sure the rest of the garden will benefit in time too.
