Using Reduced Food

I’ve always made a beeline for the reduced section of any supermarket that I visit, whether that be meat, veg or anything else. This time I found a real bargain (although I was torn because of the plastic packaging) in some organic leeks that were reduced from £2.25 to 10p!

They looked slightly shabby from the outside as I bought them on the best before date but I knew they would be OK as basically most of my veg gets eaten after the best before date anyway!

Perfectly edible organic leeks reduced to 10p!

After peeling off the outside the leeks were perfectly good and were perfect for the beef bourgignon that I was cooking up the next day in the slow cooker (I don’t eat so much meat these days but I had a visitor coming so made a big batch, filled with veg too that would likely also give me a few portions to freeze).

I’ll also serve this up with the potatoes that I have just dug out of the garden (I have planted a whole load this year so have plenty to use up) and an old bottle of wine that had gone off that a friend gave me for cooking.

So the whole meal pretty much only cost the price of the (organic) beef plus a few small extras (carrots also from the garden).

This is probably one of the best deals I have found but I do often buy stuff that I am able to put straight in the freezer and use from there when I need to.

The best deals do seem to be on a Saturday night when the supermarkets are closing up for Sunday but I have to admit I don’t often go to the supermarket on a Saturday night! Also I generally try and buy my fruit and veg from the greengrocer due to the lack of plastic so don’t often go down the fruit and veg aisle unless I need something specific or am just looking for a bargain.
